This week on Winterviews we travel though the fires of the elements as we say hello to C. M. Fick.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a Canadian writer. That’s a bit right? I’m terribly at answering questions about myself. I’m a wife & mother in my non-writing time who dabbles in web design and various types of art. I sculpt, paint, draw (in both traditional and digital mediums). I take photos of gemstones in natural settings. I’m the admin for the bookish fundraiser #Write4Life. In 2019 we’re raising money for literacy.

What types of books do you write, and why?
I write primarily Fantasy (epic) & Sci-fi. I also have a collection of short stories about a zombie apocalypse & other misc shorts.

What were your early influences, and how does this manifest in your work today?
I’ve always been drawn to SFF & horror in writing. Growing up I read a ton of Stephen King, R. L. Stein, Lois Lowry, and Michael Crichton, and when I first started writing, Kelley Armstrong.

Are there aspects of the craft that excite you more than others?
I love worldbuilding! And outlining. To immerse myself in a new world is one of my favourite things to do. I have a scrivener database that I’ve built specifically for the worldbuilding aspects of writing.

What books or websites are your go-to places while editing?
Google. I google everything—especially grammar (I’m terrible at remembering all the rules)

Tell us about your writing space.
While I have a home office, it doesn’t get internet very well so I’m camped out at my kitchen table. My little (a four year old with massive amounts of energy) is my biggest, and mostly welcomed interruption when writing. Being in the kitchen makes it difficult to get away. While I’m writing, I listen to instrumental music, whether it’s hard battle music or mellow isochronic tones it’s mostly instrumental.

Tell us about your latest WIP.

My WIP is my heart book. Currently titled FROM ASHES OF THE PAST, it tells the story about two elemental beings who wield the power of all four elements. I’ve recently finished a massive overhaul on it and I’m hoping to be querying it in the new year.
